ABOUT THE ITEM
Spinel is a wonderful gem that occurs naturally in many different colors, even colorless. The most valued spinel colors are red, cobalt blue, vivid pink and orange, with the finest qualities rivaling high quality rubies and sapphires. Spinel was cherished by ancient emperors and monarchs, as it was originally thought to be ruby. It wasn't until 1783 when mineralogist Jean Baptiste Louis Rome de Lisle identified spinel as a different mineral than ruby.
This beautiful dark red spinel cushion measures 7.08 x 6.59 x 5.30mm and weighs in at juuuuuust under 2.00 carats (1.99 ct.). It has a very rich red hue, a little darker in tone, similar to many Thai rubies. It has several natural inclusions within the gem, proving it to be natural with no indications of heating, that are only noticeable under magnification. Also, it has some very tiny surface-reaching inclusions that look like specks of dust, when viewed under magnification at the right angle.
